The Stormy Monday Show took on a jazzy tone this weekend beginning with the" puurfect" tones of Eartha Kitt, we  did some swinging with Louis Armstrong . Sybil brought in the blues with Bryan Lee and James Brown provided the soul. Sybil was up from dawn till  well, way after dusk supporting  2 charities, one for a personal friend and  the last for  Habitat for Humanitity. Don't forget to look for that DVD on Louis Armstrong " Good Morning Everybody".  See you next week on  Sybil Gage's Stormy Monday Show.

Sybil's Stormy Monday Soul Music Legends

Willie De Ville ~   I place him in my soul legend section although he encompasses so much more. De Ville had a very long career , working with the likes of Doc Pomus, Eddie Bo, Allen Toussaint among others when he lived and worked in New Orleans.  His band "Mink De Ville" was the house band at CBGB'S in New York City. He was a colorful character with a theatrical flair, one flash of his gold toothed smile spoke volumes...he was .rock and roll, a romantic poet, an original, and a soul man.

Barbara Mason started in the industry in her teens, in Philly, as a songwriter. She hit it big with the self penned "Yes, I'm Ready" in 1965. During the 70's she "grew up" and focused on sexual ballads such as "Bed and Board" and "From His Woman  to You"  which is a response to Shirley Brown's  single, "Woman to Woman" and don't forget "Shackin Up".

And, let's not forget Jean Knight, who gave us "Mr. Big Stuff." The lady can perform, and that song is one that will have you running out to the dance floor each and every time . Knight was born and raised in New Orleans. The story behind  Mr. Big Stuff is that it  almost didn't make it into world. It was rejected by record labels until King Floyd's "Groove Me " came out and was a success.  Mr. Big Stuff  was dug up, and was then released on the Stax label.  She had a few more  local hits and did some tours in the 80's before she treated us to another couple of slam dunks with "You Got the Papers but I Got the Man," and a party favorite " Don't Mess With My Toot Toot".
And these are just a few of the Legends of Soul. Stick around we'll bring more to you soon.

Take a little Jazz, add in some Blues (shaken, not stirred please) and cap it with a hint of Soul and what do you have? Why The Stormy Monday Show of course! Featured this week were Donald Byrd, Guitar Slim Jr. and Cassandra Wilson singing a great rendition of Robert Johnson's " Dust My Broom."

Folk singer Sheryl Paige stopped by the studio do drop a few of her own jams and to bring our attention to a Habitat For Humanity event coming up locally on July 24th where both she and I will be performing to aid in fundraising for a home to be built in Cocoa Florida for a woman who has MS.

So sit back, put your feet up and let Miss Sybil serve up this musical cocktail just right.

Eden Brent- Lil Boogaloo

Eden Brent's 16 years of tutelage on piano under  Boogaloo Ames has brought her into the spotlight. She is from Greenville Mississippi, and there, they call her "Lil Boogaloo".  She plays a magnificent boogie woogie piano, and has a voice compared to Diana Krall, Janis Joplin and Norah Jones, but has her own distinctive style of "gittin down". Eden Brent is a 3 time  BLUES MUSIC AWARD WINNER and this year won the "Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year."

But enough of all this yackety-yack. Listen to this girl play and you'll understand...

We had such a great time on this week's Stormy Monday Show with people listening and checking in from around the globe. Started out the night with Graham Central Station, slid in a little Queen Ida, Nina Simone and Lannie Garrett; then finished it off with Big Joe Turner, Lil Milton and Tom Browne. You've got to hear it to enjoy it, and I hope you do.

I also put a link below so you could check out the Preservation Hall CD I talked about in the show. If you only buy one CD this month, that one should be on the top of your list, it's that good, and it benefits a great cause.

This video is so cool I just had to share it with you.

And just in case you think today's youth doesn't love great music. Check this out.

Sorry fans, we had a few minor technical difficulties getting this one out to you, hence its lateness.

We kicked off the Fourth of July weekend with a cold blast from Houston's own Trudy Lynn set the tone for the rest of the Stormy Monday Show. We heard some  greats  from J.P Soars and Annie Sellick; jazzed it up with Soulful Dress, dropped in a little Stevie Wonder to really make it feel like a barbecue, and then got our  ramble on with Dr. John.  Throw on a little Billy Strayhorn, and  everybody's talking about the Stormy Monday Show.

Behind the scenes on The Stormy Monday Show!
