Sybil's Stormy Monday Soul Music Legends
Willie De Ville ~ I place him in my soul legend section although he encompasses so much more. De Ville had a very long career , working with the likes of Doc Pomus, Eddie Bo, Allen Toussaint among others when he lived and worked in New Orleans. His band "Mink De Ville" was the house band at CBGB'S in New York City. He was a colorful character with a theatrical flair, one flash of his gold toothed smile spoke volumes...he was .rock and roll, a romantic poet, an original, and a soul man.
Barbara Mason started in the industry in her teens, in Philly, as a songwriter. She hit it big with the self penned "Yes, I'm Ready" in 1965. During the 70's she "grew up" and focused on sexual ballads such as "Bed and Board" and "From His Woman to You" which is a response to Shirley Brown's single, "Woman to Woman" and don't forget "Shackin Up".
And, let's not forget Jean Knight, who gave us "Mr. Big Stuff." The lady can perform, and that song is one that will have you running out to the dance floor each and every time . Knight was born and raised in New Orleans. The story behind Mr. Big Stuff is that it almost didn't make it into world. It was rejected by record labels until King Floyd's "Groove Me " came out and was a success. Mr. Big Stuff was dug up, and was then released on the Stax label. She had a few more local hits and did some tours in the 80's before she treated us to another couple of slam dunks with "You Got the Papers but I Got the Man," and a party favorite " Don't Mess With My Toot Toot".
And these are just a few of the Legends of Soul. Stick around we'll bring more to you soon.
