Musical Influences- Soul

Bookmark and Share
This is the last of my three post on musical influences. Some of the artists here are truly influential to me, others are those I both admire and respect for their artistic talent.

I've got a good friend of mine that says that music is the only pure form of communication that there is. Hmmm, I wonder on that one, but also tend to agree. But let's hear some music.

Aretha Franklin - Don't Play That Song For Me
The first 45 I ever bought was "Respect." The rest is history.

Chaka Khan -Ain't Nobody
Chaka brought a new soulful sound liberally sprinkled with funk and musical brilliance, which the world embraced.

Al Green - Tired Of Being Alone
Gospel tinged Soul that made me a believer!

Carol King (1971)
Her Quality (with a capital "Q") songwriting is an inspiration.

Janis Joplin - Summertime (Live Gröna Lund 1969)
Janis lived and believed everything she sang about.

Bobby Womack-That's The Way I Feel About Cha
Bobby Womack is THE Man. He is what Soul is about.

Michael Jackson - She's Out Of My Life
Michael was a prolific re-inventor of himself and a remarkable entertainer.

Stephanie Mills- I Feel Good All Over
Stephanie is a real singer with a lot of emotion and a talent that is under-recognized.

Sly And The Family Stone - Stand
My favorite Funk band. If I could choose another family, it would be the Family Stone.

Esther Phillips- And I Love Him
Phillips had a very unique voice and MUCH heart and soul; as John Lennon attests to in this video.

A Video Tribute to Marva Wright

Bookmark and Share
Marva Wright was a blues and gospel singer who was a true inspiration. She passed today at the young age of 62. Only her music can speak of the impact she had on those of us that heard and loved her. She not only earned the title of Blues Queen of New Orleans but she inspired other musicians to live up to her stature. She will be missed.

Musical Influences- Jazz

Bookmark and Share

Here's the second installment about the artists that influenced my music, my career and even my childhood (growing up in New Orleans). These are the Jazz artists I promised with a quick note about what makes them noteworthy for me. Again, no introduction is needed for most of them so we'll let the music speak for itself, but I would love to here your thoughts on them.

Dee Dee Bridgewater

Breathes new life and interest into even the most overdone jazz standards.

Nancy Wilson

One of my earliest influences, sings a song with all the drama and beauty of a well written romance novel. Highly stylish.

Al Jarreau

Jarreau is a band unto himself, his voice is  a perfect, extremely innovative musical instrument.

Oscar Brown Jr.

He brings r&b , jazz and even broadway together with fine storytelling and a voice that is one of a kind.

Carmen McRae

A knockout singer with a deadpan delivery.

Ella Fitzgerald

The picture next to the word "songbird" in the dictionary.

Melba Moore

Harlem in the 50's at Minton's was the musical background of her childhood, and led her to become the remarkable singer that she is.

Louis Armstrong - Basin Street Blues - 1959

Well, Pops IS Jazz.

Rickie Lee Jones

I love her for her songwriting and the emotion delivered in her performances

Alberta Hunter -Black Shadows 1935 (very rare video)

A wonderful gracious entertainer ( I saw her act at the Cookery) and a superb songwriter.

Alberta Hunter - She had a comeback at age 83

At 83, she deserves a second video. Only hope I'm still going like this at that age

It was another Jazz and Blues adventure with Sybil this weekend on The Stormy Monday Show. We started out the night with AJ Croce, son of the infamous Jim Croce; rolled off into Keb Mo; twisted the placed up with double platinum artist Joni Mitchell and kept the train rolling from there.

As a special treat we found two very rare videos. Al Jarreau in a phenomenal 1976 performance of Take Five and Oscar Brown Jr. But I Was Cool with a rare animation (by an unknown artist). You can see them below and find all the videos Sybil features on The Stormy Monday Show by visiting Sybil's Stormy Monday Youtube Channel . Following those videos we have one of Sybil's favorite performances by AJ Croce, Cerdanyola Blues

Music Influences- Blues

Bookmark and Share
UPDATE: A couple of people asked me to place in some commentary about why these people influenced me, so as not to detract from the music I've added a line with each one.

I want to share with you just some of the major musical influences in my own life and career. We'll start with the blues. In another post we'll work through jazz and last (but definitely not least) we'll explore Soul music. Let me know what you think, what your favorites are and whose music moved you the most. And, once again, we'll let the music speak for itself.

Billie Holiday - Fine and Mellow (1957)

You can hear her life through her song in her sorrowful heartfelt expressions.

DINAH WASHINGTON Newport Jazz Fest 1958- All Of Me

Her distinctive voice goes to your ears and takes a short cut to your heart.

Nina Simone - House Of The Rising Sun

Lots of soul and emotion and intellect is what I like about her.

LaVern Baker - Substitute 1958

A woman layin down tracks back then had to be made of steel. A great voice that didn't need Jim Dandy to the rescue.

Elvis Presley - Heartbreak Hotel 56

As an entertainer he is a pleasure to watch, stayed popular through changing musical tastes and graced many genres.

Little Richard, Tutti Frutti 1956

As we say in New Orleans if less is more, imagine how much MORE would be.

James Booker performing in France 1978

I was a personal friend and witness to his extraordinary genius.

Maria Muldaur in the Jug Band of 1966

Under-appreciated, the quintessential blues singer that's been there, it's all in her voice.

Johnnie Taylor - Stormy Monday Blues LIVE African American Blues Classic

Hit maker with lyric's for the lady taker, he lived the life.

Pearl Bailey - "That's Life" on The Ed Sullivan Show 1968

If you don't care for a particular tune, listen to Pearl Bailey sing it. A true master of her craft, spicing up lyric with humorous patter, she knew how to dress up a song.

Sweet Soul Night 3-06-10

Bookmark and Share
It was a night of powerful Soul and Funk with Austin Church sitting in for Sybil and dropping jams on us like we were right back to the original era of true music. We heard greats like Marvin Gaye, Johnny Adams, The Lost Generation and Sam Cooke just to name a few. We also slipped in a few rare videos on the Stormy Monday Youtube Channel for you to groove on while you we're listening to the show.
If you'd really like to know about Soul music then Sybil suggests our friend Reg Stickings phenomenal book Searching for Soul which shows the depth and breath of this wonderful genre as well as Reg's own love for it. (And check out the CD of old classics below. It's not Reg's collection [his is MUCH larger] but it sounds fantastic.)
